My 2 cents about typography

Font selection is a very tricky thing, the font can convince a reader or it may detest him at the very beginning. So when you have to decide on a font, there is one important thing to remember "What is the presentation media, going to be"

  • For resume choose fonts which look good on screen and on paper like Arial, Verdana.
  • For slideshow use san-serif fonts like Arial, Verdana.
  • Helvetica is another good font to use for Logos and it is one of the most widely used fonts for logos. Microsoft Logo uses Helvetica font.
  • Serif fonts like Georgia, Garamond & Times look good on paper and are easy to read huge volumes of text.
  • Monospace fonts like consolas, courier are good for viewing source code. Infact, consolas is much better than courier. Get it from M$ website or google.

M$ has done a commendable job with 'Georgia' being a serif font it looks good on screen and even in italics. Bloggers default font while editing a post in IE7 is Georgia.

The fonts I frequently use and recommend on Windows XP are

  • Arial
  • Verdana
  • Garamond
  • Georgia
  • Consolas
Arial - The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog
Verdana - Jackdaws love my big sphinx of quartz
Georgia - The five boxing wizards jump quickly

Caution: While choosing a font ensure that you select a font that will be available on the computer in which your document or slide show will be opened or viewed. If the font is not available, it may be substituted with some default font.

P.S. - Pangram (noun) - A sentence or other short text using every letter of the alphabet
